Sunnyvale's housing stock runs mostly 1960s and 70s, which means a large share of garage doors are either original steel sectional units or early replacements from the same period - both styles that use thinner gauge panels than what's sold today. Thin steel dents easier and rusts faster at the seams once the factory coating starts to go.
The mild temperate climate here doesn't put doors through the freeze-thaw cycling that cracks panels elsewhere, so you won't see the kind of structural failure that shows up in colder regions. What you do see is slow seam corrosion from fog and irrigation overspray sitting against the panel edge for years at a time, plus UV fade on the south- and west-facing doors that eventually makes patch panels obviously mismatched in color even when the material underneath is sound. Across the 30 or so neighborhoods we cover, from the older tracts near Mountain View and Cupertino through the newer stretches toward Milpitas, the pattern is consistent: original-era panels wearing out roughly on schedule, decades after they were installed.
